The novel opens at Hendricks School for boys.

mansion is so enormous that Luke has difficulty
finding his way around. Servants abound catering
to his every need.

Luke's yard by his shed. Luke finds an
old rusty wagon in his shed and brings
it out to comfort Smits. As the boys play
in the wagon, Smits further bonds with
Luke.
